Window Sill Drip Details — Small Detail, Big Protection
A window sill drip detail, also known as a drip groove or throating, is a carefully formed groove on the underside of the sill, close to its front edge.
Its purpose is simple: to stop rainwater running back underneath the sill and onto the brickwork below.
Where is the drip detail?
The drip groove is normally positioned on the underside of the sill, close to the front projecting edge.
As rainwater runs off the face of the sill, it reaches this groove and is interrupted. Instead of continuing underneath the sill and tracking back towards the wall, the water is encouraged to drop clear of the building.
For a typical masonry or reconstructed sill, the groove is generally formed to provide a clear, continuous break in the water path. The exact dimensions depend on the sill material, thickness and design, rather than there being one universal measurement.
Why does the drip detail matter?
Without an effective drip detail, water can track back underneath the sill and repeatedly wet the masonry beneath.
Over time this can contribute to:
Damp and persistent moisture around the window
Deterioration of mortar joints
Brickwork damage and staining
Saturated masonry beneath the window
Peeling or damaged internal finishes
Damp patches and mould growth on interior walls, where moisture is able to penetrate or remain trapped
Persistent damp and mould should not be ignored. Apart from potentially causing significant damage to the building and finishes, indoor damp and mould can also affect occupants' health, particularly for people who are sensitive to mould or have respiratory conditions.
How we restore the drip detail
When we repair or recast a damaged window sill, we don't simply concentrate on the visible face.
We look at how the sill is designed to shed water away from the building.
Where appropriate, we form a properly positioned continuous drip detail beneath the leading edge of the sill, while matching the existing profile and appearance as closely as possible.
This is one of those details that may be barely noticed when it is working correctly — but its absence can cause years of unnecessary water damage.

One of the most important differences in our window sill repairs and recasting is the reinforcement we use.
Where reinforcement is required, we use stainless steel reinforcement rather than ordinary mild-steel rebar.
