REAL BRICK RESTORATION PROJECTS

Brick Restoration & Window Sill Repair – In-Situ Brick Face Reconstruction

This brick restoration project involved a severely deteriorated concrete window sill affected by corrosion of the steel reinforcement within it. The property had an unusual construction, with a UPVC window sill installed above the original concrete sill. Over time, the internal steel reinforcement corroded and expanded, causing the concrete sill to crack and deteriorate.

Rather than completely removing the existing sill and rebuilding the area, StoneRestoreX assessed the condition and carried out a carefully considered restoration. The damaged concrete sill was cut back to a sound section and the exposed corroded steel reinforcement was removed. The remaining surface was thoroughly prepared and keyed before being rebuilt with a suitable render-based repair.

The specialist part of the restoration was recreating the appearance of the original brickwork directly onto the repaired surface. Once the repair was formed and levelled, brick joints were carefully cut into the surface to recreate individual brick faces and the existing brick pattern. The surface was then finished and colour-matched to the surrounding brickwork.

The final stage involved carefully matching the existing weatherstruck pointing and architectural detailing around the window, allowing the restored section to blend naturally with the original façade.

This approach avoided unnecessary replacement of the surrounding brickwork while restoring the appearance of the original construction. The client was delighted with the finished result.

Specialist In-Situ Brick Restoration

Where original brickwork cannot be practically retained or where an exact matching brick is unavailable, specialist restoration techniques can sometimes recreate the appearance of individual brick faces directly onto a prepared repair surface.

London Brick Restoration – ATM Opening Closure & In-Situ Brick Face Reconstruction

Former ATM cashpoint opening in London brick wall before restoration

StoneRestoreX was asked to restore and permanently close a former cashpoint/ATM opening in a London brick façade. The client wanted the redundant opening closed, but was struggling to source new bricks that would accurately match the existing surrounding brickwork.

Rather than introduce visibly different replacement bricks, StoneRestoreX used a specialist in-situ brick restoration technique to recreate the appearance of the existing masonry directly onto the repaired surface.

The opening was carefully prepared and the new infill was constructed using breeze block as the core. Stainless steel reinforcement bars were incorporated across the repair, together with stainless steel mesh mechanically secured using stainless steel washers and fixings. This provided a reinforced base onto which the external restoration could be formed.

Once the reinforced backing was prepared, the surface was built up and finished ready for the brick-face reconstruction. Individual brick faces were then recreated by carefully forming the horizontal and vertical joints into the surface, replicating the existing brick bond and proportions.

The recreated brick faces were subsequently colour-matched by hand to blend with the surrounding London brickwork, followed by carefully finished pointing to integrate the restored section with the existing façade.

The result was a discreet restoration that transformed the former ATM opening into a finished section of brickwork without the need to source an exact matching brick. The client was delighted with the finished result.

When Matching Bricks Aren't Available — Specialist In-Situ Restoration

Finding an exact brick match can be extremely difficult, particularly when working with older or unusual brickwork. In certain situations, complete brick replacement is not the only solution.

StoneRestoreX can use specialist in-situ restoration techniques to recreate the appearance of individual brick faces directly onto a prepared repair surface. The brick dimensions, joint arrangement, texture and colour can then be carefully reproduced to help the restoration blend with the existing façade.

This London project is a good example: rather than introduce obviously mismatched bricks around a former ATM opening, the brick appearance was recreated by hand on site.
